Administrative History | Alfred Joseph Dewey was born in 1862 in Tottenham, Middlesex to Joseph, a pianoforte dealer, and Marian Dewey, He was their eldest son. He married Clara Emma Wise in 1888 and soon after this they moved to Sidcup where Alfred opened his own 'Music Warehouse' in the High Street.Alfred and Clara had two children, the eldest was Donald Dewey who was born in 1892 and the second was Valentine Dewey who was born in 1897.Alfred Dewey remained in business until just before the First World War, when he sold the shop and moved to 'Turn Again Lodge' in Wilmington. By coincidence the business was purchased by AHT Boswell, a prominent Bexleyheath photographer.Apart from his business Alfred was a member, and later Chairman, of Footscray Urban District Council. He was also an enthusiastic beekeeper, helping to form the Kent Bee Keepers' Association in 1917, and a keen amateur ventriloquist. Alfred Dewey died on the 1st June 1931 following a stroke. |
